The Here and now...
Mariko Paterson is a ceramic artist in Calgary who also teaches at the Alberta College of Art & Design. She returned from a long stint in New York a couple of years ago to resume her practice in Canada. In addition to tending to her studio practice and commitment to art education she saw an opportunity to help artists show and sell their work through the Internet.
Together with colleague Catherine Hein, who posseses a mean eye for design and a steady business sense, they have formed the company Box Social Inc.which strives to represent both the emerging and established talents of Western Canada.
Upon the announcement of Kari's decision to step down from organizing the fabulous Calgary Artist's Market, both Mariko and Catherine immediately began to lament the loss of it to artists and consumers alike. We are here to bring back the event with the same vigor as Kari brought to it with the hopes that Calgary's local artistic talents may continue to thrive and prosper.
The Legacy of Kari Woo
Since 2001 Kari Woo has been collaborating with other artists to organize renegade events that bring art to the people and people to the art. The venues have ranged from private homes to coffeehouses to community halls. In 2004 a group called the NEW CRAFT Collective was formed under her direction. They host two events per year to showcase their collected goods. Many artists have approached them inquiring how they could also show at such an event ... well, here it is! Come and support your local artists!
